Tim O’Brien: Salina Schoolhouse 1/22/2010… Sold Out In a Whisper

We ran into our friend Allison, bursting at the seams with something exciting to tell us.
“Tim’s coming!”
What? Who? Who’s coming where?
“Tim’s coming! Tim O’Brien! I finally got him. I’m so excited, can you believe it?!”
We’d been hearing it was her dream to have O’Brien play her concert series for a couple years. It was a pretty lofty dream for a 100 seat school house to host the Grammy Award-winning artist who has opened and closed Telluride Bluegrass Festival and was a founding member of Colorado favorite Hot Rize. With a few more whispers, the show sold out by word of mouth before most knew it was even happening. Tim could have certainly sold out any local venue, so we were really in for a treat.
We’ve been following the Little Church In The Pines / Salina School concert series for a few years now, making it to as many as we can. The series, run by Allison and Brooks Hybertson, takes place in a one room school house in Salina, a tiny mountain town west of Boulder. The Hybertsons invite some big names to the mostly unplugged, mostly roots Americana series (usually bluegrass, old time, traditional). The artists come because the location and the vibe is completely unique. About 100 people (more may have squeezed in for Tim) fit in the venue, where the artist usually plays with little or no amplification. The audience gets it; people sit on the edge of their seat as they get to hear sounds from the artists lips and strings to their ears, no electronic manipulation. Pure Joy.
Musicians from all over Boulder County in the Audience. Allison introduces Tim, and the excitement is palpable. Fiddlers take note of the Irish Jig Medly, and also be sure to check out the audience participation during Working on a Building. Tim’s sister Molly O’Brien and Rich Moore join for Lark in the Morning. Beautiful.
